Mario Zhekov (1898 - 1955)

Mario was born Zhekov 16.10 1898 in Stara Zagora. There he made his first steps in painting. In 1917 became a student at the Bulgarian Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. Two years later he moved to Paris and recorded in Painting Drawing School in Paris. At that time, M.Jhekov is creating his first Parisian cycle covering the works, which detect the influences of Impressionism, Expressionism, Symbolism. In 1921 he moved to Constantinople Turkey-where he made First Constantinople`s –cycle. In this cycle he recreates the Bosphorus. The castle, the port and near the city. There is emerging interest in the players colors and glare on the water which will follow in all his work. In 1925, he finish the second Parisian cycle, and in 1927 returned to Bulgaria and went to the Black Sea-there he painted Sozopol, Nessebar seek and recreate the beauty of sea water. According to art historians, he is one of the best bulgarian marinisti. Three years later M.Jhekov arranged an exhibition in the Stara Zagora, which marks the beginning of many such exhibitions after each cycle. In 1930 he moved to a southern Mediterranean Italy, France. There he is again on the beach, Riviera painting the beaches, rocks and sea. here He shows his paintings in numerous exhibitions and galleries. Two years later he is back in his homeland. Here he finish his second Black Sea cycle-scales of Sozopol and Nessebar, Varna, Balchik, Ropotamo Kamchia. M. Zhekov in 1930 makes paintings in Tarnovo, Tryavna, Karlovo, Plovdiv, Stara Planina and Rila, but these landscapes remained in the shadow of its marine landscape. In 1937 he moved to Dalmatia. In Dubrovnik he created some of the most important and remarkable of his painting.Many of this works he presented in many galleries in Croatia, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest. He becomes more popular in Europe , than in Bulgaria. In 1938. made exhibitions in Stara Zagora and in Sofia. In 1941. went to Greece, Aegean, Aegean Sea, there he painted in the islands of Thassos, Chios, Samothrace and Ohrisdkoto lake. In 1943 Mario Zhekov returned to Sofia. With the help of artist Pencho Balkanski organized most representative exhibition. Part of it he shows in Bucharest and in 1946 - in Stara Zagora. In next years he is at seaside again. There he creates dozens landscapes, some of which will be never completed. He died on 03.08.1955 in Sofia.
